Spring School Concerts on May 8 Paid Tribute To Abraham Lincoln

On Friday May 8, the Mt. Pulaski Junior High School Band and Choir presented a concert at 6:30 p.m. The Mt. Pulaski High School Band and Choir presented a concert at 8:00 p.m.  Both concerts were held at the Mt. Pulaski High School Gym.

Each musical group presented some of their pieces to honor and remember Abraham Lincoln of the 150th anniversary of his death. All the musical groups were directed by Mr. Helm, who said, “It has been nice to discuss with our students Lincoln’s significance not only in our nation’s history but also his presence and influence where we live.”

The Junior High Choir sang “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and the Junior High Band played “Freedom’s Force.”

The Junior High Band, along with the Fifth Grade Band played “Yankee Spirit March.”

The High School Choir sang “Brother, My Brother” and the High School Choir Club performed “Ashoken Farewell.” The High School Band played the “Blue Ridge Saga” and “Gettysburg March.”

Financial support for the Lincoln Tribute music purchased for these concerts was given by the

Mt. Pulaski Courthouse Foundation.

April 16 Program Featured Grade School Students

On Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m., students and others from the Mt. Pulaski Grade School recited the Gettysburg Address.  Others read poems that give honor and remembrance to Abraham Lincoln.  Some of the poems were by American poet Walt Whitman, who was a contemporary of Abraham Lincoln.  Whitman worked as a nurse in the war hospitals and had a deep admiration and love for the president who had brought our torn country through the Civil War as one.

Courthouse To Be Draped in Mourning: Crosses Made By National Honor Society To Be Hung

Mourning practices of the 1860’s will be followed in simple ways.  The Courthouse was draped with black cloth, evergreens and white ribbons.  The Mt. Pulaski High School Honor Society made crosses of live evergreens.  Evergreens symbolize eternal life.  White bows were attached.  White is the color of resurrection.  The crosses were hung on the Courthouse doors and on the doors of churches and many businesses.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Saturday, February 7, 2015

12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Kathryn Harris was regrettably unable to attend our celebration so we invited Pam Brown of Springfield, Il.

Pam portrayed Mary Todd Lincoln and performed “Taking Leave” on May 22, 1865, the last time she left the White House.

Brown has a Bachelor of fine Arts Degree from the University of Oklahoma in acting and directing.   She has been living with the character of Mary Lincoln for 7 years and has portrayed her in many different roles and plays.   Several of the plays have been performed in the Union Theater at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield.

Mike and Jennifer Richner of Hilltop Catering provided Abraham Lincoln’s favorite pie (Apple pie) and Mary Lincoln’s cake.
